CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Emma

Emma lets Sam walk back to her house with her, leaving his bike at the clinic. It’ll be faster and safer to take a car to…wherever he lives. She really shouldn’t trust him. She could stay with Taylor or Stefani, but she doesn’t want to bother them.

Her mind races at a million miles a minute. She doesn’t need to pack much—the movers are coming after she’s out. She’s already hired a private plane to get her to London. Until she finds a place, she’s staying in her friend’s house in the city. When Kiera found out about what was going on with Brad, she’d offered Emma a place to stay if she ever needed it. She needs it now.

Ranger is barking in his kennel upstairs, and she gives Sam a desperate look.

“I’ll take him outside before we go,” he offers, jogging up the stairs before she can protest. “You get whatever you need.”

She sighs with relief and follows him up, taking in her house one last time. She’s never been too attached to any particular place, but she’s going to be sad to see this one go. It’s cozy and comfortable, and everything in it is hers. Really hers. After leaving Brad, she’d spent weeks finding the perfect decor and setting it all up. And now she’ll have to start all over again.

Tears fall out of her eyes, landing on the dark wood of her dresser. She picks up a pair of underwear and considers it—pale pink and extraordinarily lacy.

Sam clears his throat behind her, and she spins around, the panties still in her hands.

Heat rushes up her face, and she drops them.

“The car is here,” Sam says, avoiding her gaze. The tips of his ears are endearingly red.

She nods and sends a message to the driver before tossing a few things in a carry-on bag. Enough clothes for a week should be plenty until the rest of her things arrive in London. She goes to the bathroom and grabs her toothbrush and skin care supplies. When she’s ready, she trades Sam her bag for Ranger.

“He got big,” Sam says, rubbing Ranger’s ears before they go downstairs.

“Yeah, he grows like a beanstalk,” Emma replies distractedly. The lacy underwear and matching bra are buried at the bottom of her bag. She’s not going to wear them. There’s plenty of underwear that’s far more comfortable.

To her surprise, Sam doesn’t live in Greenwich. Or Chelsea, which is in the general direction of where he bikes. The car takes them across the bridge into Brooklyn until they pull up to one of the ten million brownstones in the city.

Emma thanks the driver, and Sam joins her, leading her up the stairs.

“Are dogs allowed in this building?” She asks, tugging on Ranger’s favorite rope toy as he growls and yanks at it.

Sam shrugs. “Does it matter?”

She smiles to herself, and they’re silent for the rest of the climb. Sam has to jiggle the keys in the handle, and the hallway is a bit dingy. In New York, though, that’s mostly meaningless.
